Subtitle: Tokenized Equities, 24/7 Trading, DeFi Capital Activation, and Onchain Index Funds
Research date: October 22, 2026
Report type: Industry structure research / Product opportunity analysis
Research basis: Eight Binance Research reports, the user-provided CoinFound US market-structure study, RWA.xyz, official bStocks explanations, and SEC documents.
0. Executive Summary
The central conclusion is that tokenized equities have demonstrated initial demand for asset supply, distribution, and round-the-clock trading. They have not yet demonstrated that open on-chain securities asset management can sustain a market comparable in scale to traditional brokerage. Competition concerns not just issuance, but tradable liquidity, rights structures, cross-market conversion, and capital's availability for other financial uses.
Key observations:
- RWA.xyz showed approximately $3.5 billion tokenized-stock Distributed Value, $10.49 billion monthly transfers, and 4.38 million holder addresses in the recorded query. Transfers are not trades, and addresses are not unique real investors. S1
- The 2026-10-20 bStocks study reported reaching $1 billion AUM in 125 days. Approximately 68% of AUM growth was attributed to net inflows, 56% of cumulative volume occurred outside regular US hours, and the top five assets' share fell from 97% to below 50%. This supports simultaneous expansion in issuance and usage, not a promise of steady-state growth. S2
- Binance Research's September CAR measure showed equity utilization in on-chain finance rising from approximately 1.95% to 7.54%, still concentrated in liquidity pools and lending. Broader asset-management products remain early. S4
- Two US routes are emerging alongside offshore securities receipts: DTC/Nasdaq embed tokenized entitlements in existing trading and registration, while the SEC's September innovation exemption gives qualifying permissioned on-chain venues limited experimental scope. S9S10S11
- The primary product risks for on-chain index funds are not whether a contract can issue an ERC-20, but underlying assets' legal identity, custody and transfer feasibility, subscription/redemption conservation, pricing and liquidity quality, and noninterchangeable rights across issuers.
Assessment: Value capture may move from issuance alone toward a combination of issuance, distribution, execution, collateral, and asset-management protocols. Direct evidence of the market for portfolio protocols remains limited; willingness to pay and long-term AUM retention need independent validation.
1. Methodology, Data Boundaries, and Terminology
1.1 Information Hierarchy
Grade A: SEC regulatory documents, exchange and issuer announcements, and public protocol technical documents, used to establish institutional and issuance mechanisms.
Grade B: RWA.xyz, on-chain data, and explicit Binance Research statistics, used to observe scale and behavior.
Grade C: Industry reporting, scenarios, and this report's inferences, which must be labeled as forecasts or assumptions.
The user-provided CoinFound market-structure study dated 2026-10-14 is an analytical reference requiring rechecking, not automatically an official fact source.
1.2 Metrics That Must Not Be Conflated
| Metric | Meaning | Common misuse |
|---|---|---|
| Distributed Value | Distributed or circulating tokenized on-chain asset value, as defined by the platform | Treating it as all underlying securities' market cap |
| AUM | Assets managed or held in custody under the platform's definition | Treating it as net new inflows |
| Onchain Transfer Volume | Total value transferred on-chain | Treating it as distinct trading volume or protocol revenue |
| Trading Volume | Traded notional, potentially including platform and DEX activity | Treating it as real net capital formation |
| Holder Addresses | Addresses holding the tokens | Treating it as deduplicated users |
| TVL / CAR | Value/proportion deployed in specific DeFi applications | Treating it as economic returns without double counting |
| Reference NAV | Underlying net assets valued at reference prices | Treating it as an executable or redeemable price at any moment |
Binance's September The RWA Activation Era used approximately $4.43 billion in equity assets, versus approximately $3.5 billion Distributed Value on the recorded RWA.xyz Tokenized Stocks dashboard. Dates and inclusion criteria differ; this does not directly establish a short-term market decline. S1S4
2. Market Size and Stage
2.1 A Small, Fast-Growing Market Requiring Strict Measurement Boundaries
At the recorded query, RWA.xyz tokenized-stock Distributed Value was approximately $3.5 billion, holder addresses approximately 4.38 million, and monthly transfers approximately $10.49 billion. S1 The same panel showed approximately $1.2 billion bStocks, $906 million Ondo, and $608 million xStocks. Issuance is concentrated, but rankings by asset count, holder structure, and trading activity may differ.
Binance Research's September report compared on-chain equity market cap above $3 billion with approximately $38 billion in broader RWA assets. That is a historical snapshot at publication, not the same timestamp as October's dynamic panel. S3
2.2 Decomposing AUM Growth
AUM changes can be written at minimum as:
AUM(t) - AUM(t-1) = Net Issuance/Redemption + Price P&L + Corporate-Action Adjustment + Other Measurement Changes.
The October study attributed approximately 68% of bStocks AUM growth to net inflows, supporting real capital movement rather than only equity appreciation. Early volatility and significant single-week outflows also warn against extrapolating short-term exponential growth into a 2027 forecast. S2
2.3 2030 Size Scenarios Must Be Distinguished from Forecasts
Binance Research's September report cites three 2030 tokenized-equity scenarios: approximately $61 billion, $349 billion, and $987 billion, with assumed programmable penetration of approximately 0.04%, 0.23%, and 0.65%. These are scenarios, not verifiable certain predictions or the addressable market available to a specific new product. S4
Our interpretation: Even with long-term growth in tokenized-equity share, index protocols may fail to capture corresponding profits because of powerful broker distribution, low-fee ETFs, and thin on-chain liquidity. Aggregate market growth is insufficient to establish a business model.
3. Demand: Global Access, Trading Time, and Portfolio Holding
3.1 Demand for Global Access
Binance's June report showed approximately 80% of early bStocks activity from emerging markets, 93% of orders below one share, and a median trade of approximately $18.81. S7 October's study, with different dates and geographic definitions, attributed approximately 70% of volume to emerging and frontier markets. S2 These should not be directly compared as year-on-year change.
Demand hypothesis: Stablecoin-native users may more readily integrate US-equity exposure into wallet asset management. Securities access, tax arrangements, and conditions for conversion into actual shares still affect usage.
3.2 Time Flexibility and Price Discovery
The October study showed approximately 56% of bStocks volume outside regular US hours: 49% on weekdays outside regular sessions and 7% on weekends. S2 Time flexibility has a behavioral basis, but weekends are not currently the main source of demand.
Binance's July study found weekend prices reflected a substantial portion of Monday opening gaps in a limited sample. This historical correlation establishes neither sufficient executable depth nor a replicable arbitrage return. S8
September's Beyond the Closing Bell focuses on equity- and RWA-referenced perpetuals, not spot securities with identical rights. Perpetual volume cannot be added directly to tokenized spot-equity trading, and prelisting derivatives do not confer ownership of private-company equity. S6
3.3 User Segmentation and Investment Horizons
The October study found Gen Z at approximately 46% of bStocks users but only 8% of traded value. Millennials were approximately 37% of users and 78% of value. Younger users favored weekends and short holding periods; millennials held relatively longer. S2
Product implication: An exchange's active user differs from a fund product's valuable user. Fund applications should test D7/D30/D90 holding retention, recurring-investment frequency, acceptance of rebalancing, and risk budgets, rather than making trading frequency the sole North Star.
4. Three Issuance and Trading Architectures
| Dimension | Offshore issuer-backed securities receipts | DTC/Nasdaq extension of existing markets | SEC TSV native on-chain venues |
|---|---|---|---|
| Underlying rights | Economic exposure defined by issuance, custody, and terms | Recordable and transferable securities entitlements in DTC | Tokenized NMS stocks with equivalent rights under the rules |
| Venue | Exchanges and supported DeFi markets | Primarily traditional order books | Permissioned AMM pools |
| Price discovery | On-chain/platform quotes anchored to underlying securities | Existing equity-market prices | Pool pricing affected by arbitrage and inventory |
| Transfer limits | Issuer, asset, and jurisdiction dependent | Registered DTC participant wallets | TSV eligibility and asset requirements |
| Key bottlenecks | Issuer credibility, redeemability, liquidity | Depository/system integration and rollout timing | Depth, liquidity inventory, and rules |
4.1 Offshore Tokenized Equity Receipts
bStocks says its products are issued on BNB Smart Chain, backed by corresponding shares, and convertible into shares through specified platform channels. Splits and dividend reinvestment are handled through mechanisms including its Multiplier. S12 These are issuer claims requiring assessment against offering documents, custody evidence, and actual conversion rights. Direct voting rights on the listed company's shareholder register cannot be assumed.
Ondo and xStocks are also major providers, but their legal promises, holder eligibility, chains, and conversion conditions cannot be assumed identical. A DeFi product aggregating issuers by the same ticker must preserve separate asset identities.
4.2 DTC / Nasdaq: On-Chain Delivery Interfaces for Existing Markets
In December 2025, SEC staff provided a no-action arrangement for DTC's tokenized securities-entitlement pilot: eligible participants can transfer between registered wallets, while DTC retains the formal books. Nasdaq's related March 2026 rule approval opens an interface from existing securities trading to tokenized delivery. S9S10
Advantage: Existing trading and price discovery reduce the need for new liquidity pools. Limitation: Any DeFi wallet may not freely hold or custody these on-chain entitlements, so they cannot be treated as BSC ERC-20 underlying assets without verification.
4.3 SEC TSV: A Permissioned On-Chain Trading Experiment
On September 17, 2026, SEC Release 34-106402 provided a temporary, conditional exemption for certain permissioned Tokenized Securities Venues and liquidity providers. Eligible stocks must meet economic and governance rights requirements corresponding to underlying common shares, with relevant issuers permitted to object under the rules. This is a restricted experiment, not an automatic exemption for all DeFi. S11
On October 21, 2026, the SEC list included notices of intent from TSV LLC, OKXICE TSV, and Perpetuals.com, explicitly warning that inclusion does not establish compliance with exemption conditions or commencement of operations. S13
The user-provided CoinFound report compares DTC/Nasdaq with SEC TSV. Its calculations of daily trading allowances, individual-stock distribution, venue testing, and issuer objections reflect an October 14 snapshot. They should be rechecked against policy text and latest notices before external citation, not treated as live current data.
5. Capital Utilization: PAR and CAR
Definitions from Binance Research:
PAR = Qualifying On-chain Programmable Asset Value / Underlying Market Value.
CAR = Deduplicated Value Deployed in Verified On-chain Financial Applications / Circulating Qualifying Asset Value.
PAR measures on-chain penetration; CAR measures use after tokenization. Equity CAR was approximately 7.54% in September 2026, up from 1.95% at the year's start. DeFi use was concentrated in liquidity pools, approximately 65.4%, and lending, approximately 28.1%. S4
Important measurement traps:
- Summing TVL can overstate economic deployment when the same asset is reused as collateral across protocols.
- High CAR can reflect incentives and recursive collateralization rather than sustainable utility.
- Total ERC-20 issuance is not actual transferable, collateral-eligible free float.
- Market closures and transfer restrictions affect collateral liquidation value under stress.
The valuable opportunity is not artificially increasing CAR, but applications with explicit asset accounting, measurable utility, and transparent risk pricing.
6. Competition and the Value Chain
6.1 Five Market Layers
L1 Securities rights and custody: Issuers, SPVs, trustee/broker custody, and corporate actions.
L2 Tokenization & Registry: Issuance, contract identity, securities-entitlement descriptions, allowlists, and updates.
L3 Distribution & Venue: Centralized exchanges, brokers, DEXs, RFQ, and on-chain venues.
L4 Liquidity & Capital Use: Stablecoins, pools, lending, collateral, and risk management.
L5 Portfolio & Investment Application: Indexes, basket trading, strategies, NAV, fund shares, and Agent interfaces.
A new product need not rebuild all five layers. It should identify exactly where it adds value.
6.2 Competitor Roles Must Stay Distinct
bStocks: Underlying securities receipts and a platform distribution ecosystem.
Ondo / xStocks: Asset providers with their own issuance rights structures and distribution.
DTC/Nasdaq: Extensions of mature securities registration, settlement, and trading.
TSV: New on-chain infrastructure under specified conditions.
Index / Basket protocols: Portfolios built on underlying assets that can be custodied and executed.
Index protocols compete not only with DeFi peers, but brokers' existing ETFs, automated recurring purchases, fractional shares, and portfolio copying. They must show additional utility rather than simply moving holdings between platforms.
7. BFunds Strategic Fit: On-Chain Indexes as the Next Financial Layer
BFunds (bfunds.xyz) plans to begin with officially verified bStocks on BNB Smart Chain, building Index Recipes, Index Vaults with proportional in-kind subscriptions/redemptions, and fund shares. The following is strategic analysis of existing product plans, not market-validated fact or a claim that the product is already live.
7.1 Four Core Product Primitives
A. Verified Asset Identity: chainId, issuer, contract address, underlying stock, rights structure, source evidence, and asset status. Tickers and logos do not establish authenticity.
B. Index Recipe: Target weights, methodology version, rebalancing frequency, and risk limits define a strategy, not actual holdings.
C. Index Vault & Share: Reserves, proportional subscriptions/redemptions, and actual on-chain shares; vault accounting uses raw token reserves.
D. Pricing & Execution: Strictly separate reference NAV, executable bid/ask quotes, costs, freshness, and risk parameters.
7.2 Why Not Simply Replicate Traditional SPY / QQQ?
If users only want S&P 500 exposure, established ETFs and existing tokenized ETF receipts are usually simpler, deeper, and cheaper. A new multi-asset Vault adds contracts, liquidity, rebalancing, and operating costs. BFunds should prioritize products traditional ETFs do not cover or cannot conveniently combine: equity/crypto portfolios, thematic factor indexes, programmable risk budgets, Agent-reviewable rebalancing, and index shares usable directly in wallets.
Whether to launch a theme should depend on actual executability, slippage, capacity, strategy transparency, and retention tests—not narrative popularity.
7.3 Technical Safety Invariants to Define
- Unique asset identity is chain ID + issuer + full contract address; Verified and Active are independent.
- A Registry administrator must not be able to make an unknown asset eligible for deposits in one uncontrolled operation.
- In-kind subscriptions/redemptions use raw balances and total share supply; UI Multipliers must not be counted again as fund quantities.
- Deposits, rebalancing, and in-kind exits may have different pause rules, avoiding a total user lock-in during risk events.
- A multi-asset vault must not be directly claimed to implement the single-asset ERC-4626 standard.
- Single-asset USDT purchases should be enabled only with genuinely verified execution routes, quotes, and slippage constraints; otherwise use in-kind basket subscriptions.
- An assertion that a contract address matches an official Symbol does not replace source verification; on-chain operations must recheck the allowlist.
7.4 Potential BFunds Business Models and Limits
Potential primary revenues: transparent AUM management fees, actual execution-service fees, and authorized B2B portfolio infrastructure fees. Avoid duplicated fees across layers and calculate net revenue after custody, audits, price data, and rebalancing costs.
Example: $10 million average AUM × 0.35% annual fee = $35,000 annual gross management fees, before any costs. This illustrates why an early asset-management protocol cannot support a large security and operations team on small AUM alone.
8. Core Risk Matrix
| Risk | Trigger | Investor/protocol impact | Primary response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Issuer and custody | Failed conversion, invalid reserve evidence, changed terms | Prices diverge from rights | Official-source checks, documents, and issuer monitoring |
| Forged contracts | Same-name tokens, malicious tokens, abnormal proxy upgrades | Fake equities and loss of underlying reserves | Registry + code checks + contract allowlist |
| Trading depth | Closures, canceled quotes, liquidity drought | Slippage and inability to redeem | Executable quotes, limits, and risk shutdowns |
| NAV deviation | Stale sources, Multiplier mismatch | Misissued shares or incorrect NAV | Separate raw/UI, timestamps, and unit tests |
| Corporate actions | Dividends, splits, suspensions, ticker changes | Incorrect holdings and weights | Event monitoring, snapshots, state transitions |
| Lending contagion | Excessive LTV, repeated same-token collateral | Liquidations and collateral sales | Asset tiers, collateral ratios, isolation limits |
| Governance and permissions | Compromised Registry or Vault administration | Malicious assets or user funds at risk | Multisig, Timelock, Guardian, audits |
| Legal and transfer eligibility | Issuer or venue restrictions | No lawful holding or transfer | Enforce issuer constraints, without bypass mechanisms |
9. 2027–2030: Three Falsifiable Scenarios
These are this report's structural research scenarios, not Binance forecasts or certain market paths.
Conservative: Heavy issuance but stagnant real on-chain depth; users mainly trade on subsidized large platforms; on-chain indexes fail to sustain AUM because of fees, restrictions, and insufficient trust.
Neutral: A few issuers build mature conversion and market-making networks; on-chain spot, lending, and thematic baskets establish stable niches; portfolio protocols accumulate small but robust AUM through distribution.
Expansion: Asset identities standardize across issuers, trading/settlement interfaces mature, qualified liquidity providers quote continuously, and some asset-management processes become programmable on-chain operations. Index and risk-management layers develop substantial economies of scale.
The determining factor is not news counts, but sustained improvements in net-inflow retention, depth, redeemability, price deviations, usable on-chain capital, post-audit risk losses, and actual unit economics.
10. Tracking Dashboard: Proposed Weekly/Monthly Updates
| Metric | Candidate source | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Tokenized Stock Distributed Value | RWA.xyz | Outstanding stock, not net inflows |
| Issuance / Redemption Net Flow | Issuer/RWA data | Net capital formation |
| 30D Active Addresses / Holder Growth | RWA.xyz + on-chain | Usage and addresses, requiring deduplication |
| DEX vs Centralized Volume | Venues and on-chain DEXs | Market structure changes |
| Non-market-hours Volume | Platform disclosures | Time-flexibility demand |
| Executable slippage for $10,000 / $100,000 | DEX / RFQ simulated fills | Real investment capacity |
| Reference vs Executable Price Deviation | Multiple price sources | Market quality and arbitrage |
| DeFi CAR / TVL Components | DefiLlama and others | Capital use and risk composition |
| Issuer Source/Contract Changes | Official announcements + on-chain indexers | Asset-security maintenance |
| Fund Net AUM, 30/90D Retention | Index protocol itself | Fund-product PMF |
11. Final Assessment for Founders
Nominal market size alone will not create winners. Competing prematurely with issuers means facing custody, securities rights, and powerful distribution; building an exchange too early means market-making capital, inventory, and market-organization costs. For teams without core securities-issuance or exchange resources, trustworthy asset identity, verifiable trade portfolios, clear share accounting, and extensible risk interfaces may offer a better engineering entry point.
BFunds should begin with real bStocks asset verification on BNB Chain and thematic portfolio tools, then establish the economic value of fund shares, execution, and sustainable AUM. Multiple issuers and chains are design boundaries, not features the MVP must deliver simultaneously.
The conclusion is that tokenization creates programmable asset supply, but only combining authentic identity, liquidity, and capital management can produce a new financial application layer with enduring user value.
